Surviving Recital Season

Recital Season

Recital Season Survival Guide for Dance Parents

It's the most wonderful, and most chaotic time of the dance year. Here's how to get through it with your sanity (mostly) intact.

If you've been a dance parent for more than five minutes, you already know: recital season is a whole thing. Costume pickups, hair and makeup runs, last-minute safety pin emergencies, and approximately forty-seven group chats all going off at once. We've lived it. We love it. And we want to help you survive it.

Here are our favourite tried-and-true tips for keeping recital season fun rather than frantic:

๐Ÿงต Build your emergency kit early

Safety pins, fashion tape, a spare nude bra, extra bobby pins, and a small sewing kit. Keep it in your dance bag all season. You will use it โ€” and so will three other parents backstage.

๐Ÿ“… Put every date in your calendar now

Dress rehearsal, photo day, performance night, costume return deadlines โ€” get them all in one place before the season hits full speed. Future you will be very grateful.

๐Ÿ‘— Sort costumes before the rush

Try everything on early โ€” yes, including the tights. Check for missing buttons, loose straps, and anything that needs a quick fix. Discovering a problem the night before is infinitely more stressful than discovering it now.

๐Ÿ’œ Let go of perfect

Hair won't be perfectly smooth. Someone will forget a prop. That's recital. The moments that matter are your dancer on stage, doing the thing they love. That part is always perfect.

After the curtain comes down...

Once recital season wraps up, you'll likely have costumes that have had their moment in the spotlight. Instead of tucking them away in a bin, consider passing them on through ReSpin โ€” earn back some of what you spent, or donate them to help fund our annual BC dance scholarship. Either way, those costumes get to keep dancing. ๐Ÿฉฐ

Keep dancing,
